The old state of Bulgaria was established in 681 AD by the Bulgars - a Turkic people - and the slavs. In the 9th century, the Thessloniki brothers Cyil and Methodius created the slavonic script (later know as cyrilic alphabet) that was to lay the foundation for great literaryand cultural achievements. Overrun by the Ottoman turks in 1393, the country was in a state of non-existence for almost five hundred years, but regained its independence in 1878. After world war II, Bulgaria entered in eastern communist block. In November 1989 however, the totalitarian regime was overthrown and since then the country been undergoing democratic changes which has lead to great iconomic increace and properties rising prices.
